Description
When horses were the only means to farm the big wheat fields of the Palouse in the west, up to 40 horses at a time were used to pull combines harvesting wheat. The hitch was led by the strongest and most reliable team. The driver only had to drive these two as all the other horses were tied together in a complex engineering that comprised what was the state of the art of horse powered farming. Big Hitches were unique to the west as there was alot of property available. The challenge was to get it all in crop so the bigger the hitch the more equipment could be used to till and harvest. One such hitch was the "Talkington Hitch" developed by two brother who farmed 1500 acres apiece with a big hitch in 1906 at Harrington, WA.
