Artist's Description

These beautiful species of salmon, sockeye, turn from silver to bright red and green as they swim home to spawn from years of surviving a life among the dangers of living in the ocean. At one time sockeye swarmed the rivers of the Pacific Northwest in enormous schools that measured in the millions yet today have diminished to small numbers in few streams. What with their waters warming and over fishing in international waters these fish will soon disappear unless we do all we can to assure they survive. I have set myself the project of exploring the issue in my work and hope it helps influence others to regard the need to protect and re-establish runs of salmon in our Pacific Northwest waters.

Light stopped in the fabric of time, becoming material. Starlight caught in the web of earth's karma on the eternal path of existence. I work en plein air daily as a gardener works his garden, in contrast to my studio work which is a reflection of what I've found most significant in those daily efforts. It usually has to do with light and substance. Light is the substance of the universe from which all is derived. It is a marvelous yet challenging privilege to be a painter. I love painting en plein air. It is a method that reflects today's world...
