Artist's Description

How a teamster holds the lines for driving 4 horses, two and two. It takes strength and sensitivity to talk to horses through leather lines 20 feet long. What was once a skill by many is now a skill by few that I feel should be preserved for posterity. I do these charcoal drawings in preparation for large oil paintings.

I work en plein air daily as a gardener works his garden, in contrast to my studio work which is a reflection of what I've found most significant in those daily efforts. It usually has to do with light and substance. Light is the substance of the universe from which all is derived. It is a marvelous yet challenging privilege to be a painter. I love painting en plein air. It is a method that reflects today's world...
